Workshops

Over the years, I have received many opportunities to participate in workshops and seminars to improve my skills and understanding of journalism. My teachers, fellow classmates, and trusty camera helped me take these experiences with me into the newsroom.

Summer of the New York Time Camp 2022; Photojournalism as Art

Before the start of the school year, I was accepted into the School of The New York Times summer program, specifically the Photojournalism as Art program. I spent two weeks in New York, spending about 8 hours in and out of the classroom in order to expand my photography skills. Part of the program was to visit every borough in NYC and to craft a portfolio that encapsulated my experience. Under the supervision of advisors Robert Johnson and Ángel Franco, I feel like I have made life-long friends and grew as a person and as a photojournalist.

MIPA Summer Camp 2021; 'Shoot Like a Pro' and 'Beyond the Basics'

Although it was entirely online due to COVID-19, attending the MIPA Summer Program helped push me to be more vocal in my photojournalism and learning. I wanted to learn how to better communicate my message and talk to people on the street. These classes helped me feel more confident in my skills as a photographer, which in turn, encouraged me to interview strangers for street photography assignments. I am honored to have received the Award of Excellence during the ‘Beyond the Basics’ program and the Sparty Award during the ‘Shoot Like a Pro’ program.

MIPA Conference 2022

This school year I was able to attend the 2022 MIPA Conference held in Lansing, MI. However, instead of attending photography courses, I decided to attend graphic design, web and videography courses that were offered. I wanted to have a better understanding of what my staff member’s work so if need be, I would be able to help them. My co-editor and I also attend a course called ‘50 ways to boost online coverage,’ which I found sensational and we have even begun to implement ideas such as competitions and student sections into our website because of it.
